Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is a form of epilepsy that is often therapy-resistant. The ghrelin axis is gaining more attention as ghrelin demonstrated to interfere with hippocampal gliosis, inflammation and cell death, well-known hallmarks of TLE that persistently aggravate the condition. Additionally, ghrelin was found to influence autophagy, a cellular process that is implicated in epilepsy when impaired. By investigating the role of the ghrelin system in epilepsy and by elaborating on autophagy, we aim to deliver new, fundamental insights regarding antiepileptic mechanisms, which can be used to open up new therapeutic avenues to treat patients with TLE.
