Currently, cognitive deterioration is difficult to assess in a quantitative way. To improve this, Johan Baijot will employ graph theoretical analysis to analyse resting-state fMRI data from multiple sclerosis patients and healthy controls. Using functional connectivity measures networks will be extracted from the resting-state data. Then, parameters such as rich clubness, shortest path length or modularity will be computed in order to measure the efficiency of the extracted networks. Parameters like these will then be linked to individual’s cognitive abilities assessed by a wide range of neuropsychological outcomes. This will allow us to relate differences in the functional organisation of the brain, as a consequence of demyelination and neurodegeneration in MS, to cognitive deterioration.
